“LinkedIn for Networking & Job Search Success”

This meeting took place on February 3, 2016 in 3001 SCB. The meeting started at 6:05 p.m. and ended at 7:20 p.m. There were 23 members that attended this meeting. Megan Riksen from the Career Center at GVSU gave her presentation on the best practices for using LinkedIn and how to transition from a student to a professional.

This presentation gave students an overview on how use LinkedIn as a tool to showcase themselves to professionals which can lead to current internship or post-graduation job opportunities. Megan told us that LinkedIn is a way to interact with professionals, recruiters, college or university alumni groups, companies, and other fellow students. Megan went over how to effectively utilize some of LinkedIn’s features that students may have been unfamiliar with before. Students learned how to effectively write their concise headline, summary statement containing “industry buzzwords”, skills and experience section, and published posts. Megan also made students aware of how to make endorsements and that new connections could be made by joining groups. It is said that “80 percent of jobs are not advertised online,” so it is important to have a LinkedIn account if job searching. It is also best to get personal when making connection request messages. This was a fun and beneficial meeting because it is important to know how to use LinkedIn properly because it is another source of information on an individual that professionals and recruiters use in addition to resumes.
