Comprenew Volunteer Event 9/12/15

September 12, 2015

Six members of the Enterprise Systems Student Union volunteered three hours of their Saturday to help take apart computers at Comprenew. Comprenew is a nonprofit organization located in downtown Grand Rapids, who recycles and extends the life of electronics. Their mission is to protect people as well as the environment from old electronics that no one no longer uses or wants.

We started out the day by watching two informational videos. The first video was about the need for recycling electronics and the second video was about Comprenew. I thought it was pretty cool that Grand Valley students created the video about Comprenew. We were then given a tour of the facility. Our instructor showed us where each part of the computer that we were going to take apart would go.

The next step was to put on safety gear, which included safety glasses and gloves. Now it was time to grab a computer and start taking it apart. It was surprisingly a lot of fun to take apart a computer. We were able to use tools such as screwdrivers and wire cutters. As a group, we took apart over thirty computers. This was equal to over 1,000 pounds of electronic waste that we were able to help recycle.

It was a very rewarding experience to be able to help our community as well as protect our environment. Whoever says taking apart computers is not fun, has never tried it!
