ERP Program Speaker Series Featuring Spectrum Health - ESSU

February 22, 2017

This meeting started at 6:05 p.m. in the Seidman Forum. This meeting was our second ERP Speaker Series of the semester. This week we were happy to have Greg Snow from Spectrum Health come and give a presentation on Data and Analytics.

After Professor Knoll gave a brief overview of ESSU and the Grand Valley ERP Program, Greg started the presentation by shortly going over his prior work experience. Greg is currently the Director of Enterprise Information Management at Spectrum Health. Spectrum advantages, as Greg said, comes from the fact they operate regional hospitals, have their own medical care group, and insurance compensation. The healthcare field including hospitals have been late to the curve in capturing data electronically. There is now a need for accessible information, however, that can be costly as Greg pointed out. There are some recent drivers in data and analytics like from economics, consumerism, and the Internet of Things. The goal of analytics is to turn data into insight, however, there are challenges like messy data. Greg stressed the importance of standard data going in.  There are many roles in IT at Spectrum Health like data developer/architect, data steward, data analyst, and data scientist. The last part of the presentation, Greg explained that data is becoming a core asset. He also highlighted on some topics like Real-Time Intelligence from the Data of Tomorrow concept. There was a short Q&A held afterwards. The meeting concluded at 6:53 p.m. and there was time for networking afterwards.

After the Speaker Series, there was an officer E-board meeting. The meeting started at 7:18 p.m. The purpose of this meeting was to do a Design Thinking Workshop on topics like Pew and Allendale campus outreach, collaboration with other student organizations, and social media use like OrgSync. The meeting ended at 7:47 p.m.
