ESSU Discussion With Derek Loranca, An SAP Mentor - 04/05/2017

April 05, 2017

ESSU met Wednesday evening and started our conference call with David Loranca at 6:02 P.M in the Seidman Forum. We were pleased he could speak with us and share career advice and guidance. He is currently the lead of the Business Intelligence center of excellence at Aetna, working from home five days a week.

We received an overview of his past education beginning La Salle University then continuing to receive a double master's at Temple University in Philadelphia for Health Care Administration and Health Care Finance. Derek's role is highly engaging and communicative in terms of SAP at Aetna. He attends conferences for SAP and ASUG while also meeting with vendors semi-annually, and acts as a mentor for the ASUG volunteer program.

One of the most prominent words of advice he gave were to be flexible in your career, to listen to everything in the first role you are in, and to work hard. Developing those key traits early on in your career will build healthy habits setting you up for success.  Any new knowledge you encounter, any advice you hear, or any complaint you acknowledge will help you strive for the next step in your career. Flexibility was one of his trademarks in his career helping him to utilize and learn new skills for the fundamental leverage in the business world.

We topped off the evening with an interactive Q&A discussing some of his largest challenges he faced in the business world, and the constraints he faced on a day to day basis in terms of app updates and customer reactions.

The conference ended at 7:04.
