Professor Franciosi and Honors Students Receive Grant

This June two Honors College students and Prof. Franciosi will participate in a two-week study/service program sponsored by the Holocaust Education Foundation (HEF) of Northwestern University. The trip is underwritten by the HEF, GVSU’s Joseph Stevens Freedom Endowment, and the GVSU Honors College. Besides visiting major Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe—including Babi Yar in Kiev and Treblinka outside of Warsaw—the students and Prof. Franciosi will perform clean-up work at several Jewish cemeteries. Both activities will strengthen his 2017 offering of HNR311: Remembering the Holocaust, a Spring course which centers on study in Germany and Poland. In addition, the grant supports Franciosi’s travel to several sites in Austria, in particular, Hartheim Castle, a major “euthanasia” site near Linz where the Nazis murdered 18,000 disabled Germans.
