In this undated postcard photo of the Place du Midi in La Ferté-Macé,
towards the bottom right one can see a woman in an apron leaning over some
sort of "iron contrivance" (Enormous Room 157). Could this be the
pump where C and his fellow inmates went to "catch water"? For a possible
answer, continue on to "an iron contrivance . .
. " (page 2).
