Policy & Procedure on School of Engineering Equipment

Students must be qualified to operate most equipment located within the School of Engineering laboratories. Qualification is required in order that students have knowledge of safety and operating procedures associated with particular processes, equipment, and machinery.
 
Qualifications are required for the below listed processes, equipment, and machinery.


   1. PAD 002 Machinery. Required of all students using the PAD 002 lab.
  2. Kennedy MicroKinetics Lab. Required of all students using the MicroKinetics mills
        and power equipment in KEN 252.
  3. Keller Wood Shop. Offered to students who have been selected for secondary
        admission to the School of Engineering.
  4. Keller Machine Shop Safety, procedures, saws and drills. Offered to students who
        have been selected for secondary admission to the School of Engineering.
  5. Keller machine shop manual mills. Offered to students who have been selected
        for secondary admission to the School of Engineering.
  6. Keller machine shop manual lathes. Offered to students who have been
        selected for secondary admission to the School of Engineering.
  7. Keller Welding and Plasma cutting machines. Offered to students who have been
        selected for secondary admission to the School of Engineering.
  8. Keller NC vertical machining center. Offered to students taking course EGR 367.
  9. Keller NC turning Center. Offered to students taking course EGR 367.
10. Kennedy Soldering Procedures. Offered to all engineering and pre-engineering students.
11. ECE Laboratory Safety Procedures. Required of all students working with high and low voltage lab equipment.
12. ME/PDM Laboratory Safety Procedures. Required of all students working in Mechanical and Product Design laboratories.
13. Electronics Assembly. Required of all secondary admit students using KEN 226 laboratory.
14. Robotics and Automation. Required of all secondary admit students using KEB 205 & KEB 209.
 

The qualifying student will sign and date a verification of understanding form as each step of the qualification process is completed. The qualifying student will either be given one business card sized qualification card or present a current qualification that will be endorsed by the qualifying lab supervisor.
 
Students have to carry their qualification card on them at all times when operating School of Engineering equipment. Students may have to present the card whenever challenged for his/her qualification or when working in a SOE laboratory. The challenge can come from either faculty or staff of the School of Engineering.
 
The verification of understanding form will be maintained on file in the students’ records which are kept in the engineering office. (KEN136).
 
Qualification opportunities will be advertised in the form of a calendar with a heading that says “SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING QUALIFICATIONS SCHEDULE. The Schedule will be posted throughout KEN/KEB showing dates and times qualifications will be done. Once the schedule has expired for the semester, it is final.
