I am in my last semester of the GVSU articulated master’s program working towards a B.S.E and M.S.E in Mechanical Engineering. This is my second semester of a 2 semester GA position working for Dr. Barakat helping in keeping the robotics lab in working order and building additional teaching tools to be used in conjunction with the machines in the lab.
Working in the lab I have gained extra experience examining the inner workings of complex robotic arms seen in industry. The best way to learn how something works is to take it apart and fix it. In doing this I have gained valuable knowledge on troubleshooting problems. I have also been working with the i/o systems of the robots, something that I hadn’t really worked with extensively in my class work.
This GA position has opened up opportunities for possible publications in the field of robotics as well as possible master’s thesis opportunities, however since I am in my last semester, I had already previously chosen my thesis topic. The financial compensation has also helped in allowing me to continue my education
