Sensitive to the expectation that students with disabilities typically must work harder than other students and for longer hours, the Assistive Technology (AT) office offers students with disabilities a "level playing field" by helping them in any way possible to bridge this gap of expectations. Students can therefore benefit from AT's programs that scan, recognize and read text from textbooks and other different file formats. There are other programs that can magnify the computer screen and read the menu and icon information aloud. Software packages that recognize human speech and allows students to write papers or use their voice to command the computer are also available for students who qualify to use them. Training is provided for these students. Currently available in most Grand Valley computer labs are AT computers with assistive software and hardware. If you are a member of the Disability Support Services program and are interested in setting up an appointment to be introduced to Assistive Technology |
