Recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated 1 in 88 children are diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum Disorder. More children are affected by autism than by diabetes, AIDS, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy or Down syndrome – combined.
Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) falls within the spectrum and is a pervasive social developmental disorder. Characteristics include impairments in social and communication skills, as well as repetitive and restricted patterns of behavior.
College campuses are seeing a rise in qualified students within the spectrum. Because these individuals have unique needs, they often require strategic and non-traditional supports. These interventions do not typically involve a greater level of effort from faculty and advisors, just an individualized approach.
Amy Matthews, Ph.D. of Psychology will be leading this presentation.
