Grand Valley's Commitment to Inclusion and Equity

“Diversity is about enhancing the mission of Grand Valley State University. It is important to create an environment where we can all succeed, an environment which is informed by diversity and embraces it.”

Thomas J. Haas, Ph.D.
President, Grand Valley State University
People of Color Reception, January 2007

The mission of Grand Valley State University is to educate students to shape their lives, their professions, and their societies. To realize this mission, a range of thoughtful perspectives is necessary for open inquiry, liberal education, and a healthy community.

Grand Valley seeks and welcomes a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. The institution values a multiplicity of opinions and backgrounds and seeks ways to incorporate all voices and experiences into our university. “Inclusion and equity are intellectual assets that will prepare our students to succeed in the diverse workplace of the 21st century,” Haas said. Our policies of inclusion and equity, as articulated by President Haas, enjoy the unanimous support of the Board of Trustees.

Grand Valley’s position is that inclusion and equity are active, not passive words. Inclusion establishes that diverse voices will have equal opportunity for expression in a campus environment that respects and honors the varied cultural and constituent groups that comprise our community. The culture at Grand Valley will dictate an active involvement of diverse groups, not just the invitation to be here.

To its constituents — faculty, staff, current and prospective students, alumni, parents, and the community — Grand Valley is distinguishing itself as an institution “where doors are open and all voices are heard.”
