Grammar Mirth - Playing with Parts of Speech

Date and Time

Wednesday, January 17, 2018 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Description

Participants of this grammar-based workshop will be able to make the explicit connection between reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar knowledge. During this training, we walk through how to create class generated grammar walls and concept charts that explicitly teach the eight parts of speech and other grammar basics. These concepts apply to the learning statements from the NWEA" Learning Continuum for all grades (mainly K-8). Participants will learn a methodology called 'Text-cavation" that can be an extension to help students improve their sentence fluency and ability to produce complex sentence structures. Another methodology that participants will learn is "Syntax Surgery;" which continues to reinforce the parts of speech and syntax of a sentence in a fun hands-on learning experience. This workshop also will provide participants with lesson plan, poster, and/or game ideas to introduce and practice the parts of speech in meaningful ways. The foundation of some of these strategies is based from Kevin Clark's consulting team.
