Unemployment Scam

October 14, 2016

Within the last month GVSU has received notice of two claims filed with the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) by GVSU employees that have been fraudulent.  In both cases, the individuals are still actively employed by Grand Valley and did not file the claims.  For both, we reported to the UIA that these claims were fraudulent and also informed the employees that claims had been filed under their name/SSN.  We indicated that they should also keep an eye on their accounts for any suspicious activity.  We will continue to follow this practice if any additional fraudulent claims are received.

UIA also recommends that individuals who have had their identity stolen go to irs.com and complete a 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit and report the identity theft to the credit bureaus.
