No Internet Privacy

July 05, 2016

A federal judge in Virginia has ruled that a user of any computer connected to the Internet should have no expectation of privacy because “computer security is ineffectual at stopping hackers.” The case involved the FBI hacking Playpen, a hidden site used for child exploitation. The FBI took over the site and used it to investigate the site’s visitors - essentially using a single warrant to investigate thousands of people. The judge claims the warrant was unnecessary since no one on the Internet can reasonably expect to be private. Privacy experts balk at this. Should we not expect privacy in our homes because burglars can get in if they try really hard?
