From Their Perspective: Summer Enrichment Camp

Student: D'El Rapp (junior, Taylor Preparatory High School; pictured left)

How did you first hear about the Summer Enrichment Camp?

People from the Charter Schools Office came to my school and told us about it. I had also heard a lot about it from my friends who came to the camp last year.

What was the main factor that influenced your decision to come to the camp?

Ever since I first visited GVSU on another class trip, I knew I wanted to be here. I just wanted to do this camp because I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime, and I was really interested in staying in the dorms.

What has been the most surprising thing so far about camp?

I couldn't believe how everybody here has become such a close family. I've only been here for four days but I feel like I know everybody since [before] we got here.

What was your favorite academic activity?

Biomedical Science class. I want to be a veterinarian, so I was really excited for that. It was great!

What was your favorite non-academic activity?

Going to the dunes and Silver Lake. I was nervous to go on the boat and go tubing and the counselors and others helped me overcome my fear. When someone is seeing you're scared or vulnerable and comforts you, that is a cool bond.

What is your biggest takeaway from camp?

College life in general, and that the atmosphere at Grand Valley is really peaceful. I know I'm never going to stop talking about it until I get to go here. Oh, and I had never met anybody from Spain before. That was cool!

How did you first hear about the summer camp?

I heard about it through my friends, teachers and principal.

What was the main factor that influenced your decision to come to the camp?

When I go to college, I want to be able to meet professors and new people. I thought this camp gave me the opportunity to do that before actually going to college.

What has been the most surprising thing so far about camp?

I've learned that some parts of it can be challenging, but to still put my best foot forward no matter what. I'm also impressed with how helpful the counselors have been.

What was your favorite academic activity?

Physics class was my favorite. I also liked International Studies because I liked learning about different countries and cultures.

What was your favorite non-academic activity?

Definitely the dune rides.

What is your biggest takeaway from camp?

To always show and tell people who you are with confidence because they may want to become your friend.
