Practicum Opportunities

Each student in the CSAL concentration is required to complete EDG 685 Practicum/Graduate Field Experience. This a field based experience designed to allow students to pursue specialized areas of interest and is completed during the second year of a full-time program. A required component related to the practicum is a seminar that helps students apply theory to practice. Seminar students meet as a group with faculty during Fall and Winter Semesters and meet online during the Spring/Summer Semester. Students must have permission fom the CSAL coordinator to enroll and apply by February 1st for summer and fall semesters by September 15th for winter semester. Students who choose to complete a second practicum may enroll in EDG 601 Content/Curriculum Workshops with permission of the CSAL coordinator. This course satisfies an elective. |

Academic Advising
|
When:
This position is open for Spring/Summer (2 positions) and Fall (1 positions). The work hours will be dependent on applicant availability and will be determined in coordination with the CCPS Advising Center prior to applicant selection. Hours of availability will need to be within the Advising Center’s operating hours of Monday – Friday 9am-5pm during the Spring/Summer and 9am-6pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm on Friday for Fall. The expectation is 10 hours a week for the entire 15 week semester.
Where:
The CCPS Advising Center is primarily located on the Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. The Center supports over 2000 undergraduate students who major or minor in Criminal Justice, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Legal Studies, Public and Non-Profit Administration, or Social Work. There is a satellite office in Allendale that is staffed several times per week. This position will also assist with new transfer student orientation which will be located in our downtown office during Fall and much of Spring/Summer with some Allendale group sessions during the Spring/Summer semester.
What:
This position is open for a CSAL student interested in gaining experience in the academic advising profession. The position will assist the staff of the CCPS Advising Center in reviewing degree requirements, developing academic plans, and assisting students with registration and other academic support issues.
The purpose of this practicum is to:
1) Gain a better understanding of the academic needs of students through academic advising services offered by the College of Community and Public Service.
2) Gain experience working one-on-one with students while also becoming familiar with the practices associated with academic advising, the University, and the student.
3) Gain a better understanding of academic advising philosophy and standards put forth by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS)
Learning Goals:
1) To research and become familiar with the philosophy and history of Academic Advising and to develop a personal advising philosophy statement.
2) To learn more about the services offered to students through the CCPS Advising Center and other related sources.
3) To effectively work with CCPS students one-on-one and in group academic advising meetings.
4) To increase knowledge of the University & requirements concerning academic performance and degree progress of students.
5) Become familiar with University resources available to students.
Evaluation:
The practicum student will be given continuous feedback and guidance by the Director and other staff of the CCPS Advising Center.

Office of Multicultural Affairs practicum/internship provides an opportunity to work in a culturally diverse environment and to enhance intercultural competency skills.
Primary responsibilities may include:
- Assist with designing, coordinating and hosting various cultural programming and diversity lecture series
- Assist with coordinating and administering OMA following programs including pre-college preparation, peer mentoring and multicultural cohort programs.
- Conduct research on current trends and intercultural current issues
- Collaborate with other campus units, attend OMA’s staff meetings and monthly divisional meetings and participate in team projects and programs as assigned.

The Grand Valley State University, Office of Housing and Residence Life has a number of practicum opportunities available throughout the 12 month academic year. Candidates must be full-time students in the Master of Education, College Student Affairs and Leadership program through the College of Education; or in an affiliate university program. Positions will be supervised by an Assistant Director in Residence Life. Interns would have the opportunity to develop and gain skills in the competency areas of administration, advising, counseling, consultation, communication, assessment, diversity, research, sustainability, and leadership.

This practicum experience will provide the applicant with the opportunity to work with others and gain ‘management’ skills by way of providing insightful advice and support to undergraduate students in an advisory/mentoring role. It will also provide opportunities to work with data/assessments and recognize the value these reports provide to the institution/program. This position can be filled by two (2) seperate individuals, one for Fall semester and one for Winter semester.
Term(s): Fall/Winter semesters; (10) hours per/week (1) position for each semester.
Hours will be flexible, dependent on when applicant is available and also when workshop observations need to be conducted.
Position Description/Responsibilities:
- Review/familiarize yourself thoroughly with the Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) program.
- Regularly observe (SLA) workshops.
- Provide feedback to SLA facilitators by way of regular meetings.
- Mentor facilitators, suggesting ways to be more effective in the workshop/’classroom’ environment.
- Compile/produce SLA data and assessments as directed by SLA Coordinator.

Practicum requirements:
- Portfolio: Student will compile a portfolio of materials gathered from the practicum experience. This may include organizational charts, mission statements, project flyers, educational materials, notes during meetings, etc. This portfolio will be assessed by the faculty advisor as part of the practicum's grade and evaluation.
- Paper: Student will write a reflective paper outlining what he/she learned during the practicum.

Program Description:
GO! New Student Orientation is a program designed to enhance student success during the first year of college at GRCC. In addition to developing an academic plan, students learn about college expectations; how to navigate campus and an understanding of campus support programs and services. A parent/guest session is offered for those who support our students in their first year.
Responsibilities:

This position is an internship opportunity for undergraduate or graduate level students to gain practical experience in the area of leadership and youth development programming in a high school environment.
We are currently interviewing for Fall 2012 positions and will accept applications until July 30th.
Duties:

Plan and execute leadership and youth development programs* as follows:
- Students Together Educating People (STEP): A program comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors who are trained to present on the topics of peer pressure and bullying to fifth graders at the three elementary schools in EGR.
- Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM): A program comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors who are trained on team-building activities for third graders at the three elementary schools in EGR.
- Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU): A program comprised of freshmen who are trained to present and discuss the dangers of tobacco use to elementary and middle-school aged students.
- Recruit student volunteers and train for involvement in above programs.
- Maintain records of all activities and develop new procedures as necessary.
- Serve as role model for high school and middle school students.
Qualifications:
College students who are majoring in Education, Public Relations, Communications, and/or related fields. Candidate must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, attention to details, ability to manage several projects at once, excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to relate well with high school and middle school-aged students. Working knowledge on word processing is necessary.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Center at Indiana University South Bend is seeking one graduate intern for the summer of 2012 to assist with advising and the development of programming for undecided students. It is preferable that the candidates are enrolled in a graduate program pertaining to higher education administration including advising and student services.
This internship will provide a learning experience at a regional campus of a state system university which consists of about 8600 students. During this experience, students will gain an opportunity to increase awareness of student development, improve listening, communication, critical thinking, and problem- solving skills during interaction with undecided students, faculty and staff.
Internship responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one academic advising with first year students who are undecided about their major
- Review program requirements, assist students with registration, the exploration of majors and other academic concerns
- Assist academic advising staff with orientation and pre-registration
- Develop programming for undecided and at-risk students
