Service Learning
Involvement in the service learning activity helps students learn about some of the cultural, social, political and economic issues in Mexico and to reciprocate this learning with people in Mexico as part of their cultural exchange program. Students are encouraged to reflect upon their lives and the lives of others in light of what they learn from other people and other places. Past service learning sites include the Ipoderac Orphanage in Atlixco where students worked in the carpenteria tearing apart crates or the cheese factory washing or packaging cheese, loading boxes, or helping clean the volunteers' living quarters. The group also visited the Santa Ines Senior's Shelter and spent time talking with residents there. Language barriers often made conversation difficult but the experience was moving and even overwhelming for some students as well as residents. The Cegerdi Senior Citizens day care center was another site visited by the students. The most recent service projects have taken place at Internado Julian Hinojosa, an elementary school for children from families living in poverty.
