CSAL Practica Each student in the CSAL concentration is required to complete EDG 685 Practicum/Graduate Field Experience. This is a field based experience designed to allow students to pursue specialized areas of interest and is completed during the second year of a full-time program. A required component related to the practicum is a seminar that helps students apply theory to practice. Seminar students meet as a group with faculty during Fall and Winter Semesters and meet online during the Spring/Summer Semester. Students must have permission from the College of Education to enroll and apply by May 15 for fall, Sept 15 for winter, and Feb 15 for spring/summer. Students who choose to complete a second practicum may enroll in EDG 601 Content/Curriculum Workshops with permission of the CSAL coordinator. This course satisfies an elective. Undergraduate Advising Center When: This position is open for Winter 2009 (1 position), Fall 2009 (2 positions) and Winter 2010 (1 position). The work hours will be dependent on applicant availability and will be determined in coordination with the CCPS Advising Center prior to applicant selection. Hours of availability will need to be within the Advising Center operating hours of 9am-6pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-5pm on Friday. The expectation is 10 hours a week for the entire 15 week semester. However during Winter semester, it may be possible for more hours to be put in during the peak registration period from March-April in order to end the practicum experience early (ideal for those working on thesis/projects). Where: The CCPS Advising Center is primarily located on the Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. The Center supports over 1,600 undergraduate students who major or minor in Criminal Justice, Hospitality and Tourism Mangement, Legal Studies, Public and Non-Profit Administration, or Social Work. There is a satellite office in Allendale that is staffed several times per week. What: This position is open for a CSAL student interested in gaining experience in the academic advising profession. The position will assist the staff of the CCPS Advising Center in reviewing degree requirements, developing academic plans, and assisting students with registration and other academic support issues. The purpose of this practicum is to: 1) Gain a better understanding of the academic needs of students through academic advising services offered by the College of Community and Public Service. 2) Gain experience working one-on-one with students while also becoming familiar with the practices associated with academic advising, the University, and the student. 3) Gain a better understanding of academic advising philosophy and standards put forth by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) Learning Goals: 1) To research and become familiar with the philosophy and history of Academic Advising and to develop a personal advising philosophy statement. 2) To learn more about the services offered to students through the CCPS Advising Center and other related sources. 3) To effectively work with CCPS students one-on-one and in group academic advising meetings. 4) To increase knowledge of the University & requirements concerning academic performance and degree progress of students. 5) Become familiar with University resources available to students. Time Frame: April-July, April-May 12-15 hours a week, then 20-40 hours a week in mid June to mid July. Duties: Assist the TRiO Advisors to organize summer programs for 6th through 12th grade youth on campus. Externship/Internship Opportunities Winter 2009/ Fall 2010 For more information about any of the following opportunities, please contact Michelle Burke (331-2358 or burkemi@gvsu.edu). This group, made up of representatives from more than ten different departments across the University, won the “Outstanding Team Project” award last year at the annual A/P Luncheon. An extern/intern would become an official member of the NTS Work Group. Benefits: This position would be good for a person with interests in academic advising; assisting adult learners; general interests in university recruitment/retention issues; this is also a low-pressure way to learn about Web site content management. This group is a wonderful example of colleagues working across unit lines, and provides a number of possible mentors from throughout the campus. Supervisors: Leslie Bateman and Marty Litherland (Continuing Education) Commitment: Monthly meetings (Thursdays, The group prefers a long-term commitment from someone who will also be available during the summer. Responsibilities: o Help organize Non Traditional Student Appreciation Week (first week of November) o Attend and record/distribute notes of monthly meetings o Assist Leslie Bateman with collecting, creating, and editing content for the www.gvsu.edu/nontraditional site, and monitoring any student questions sent through the Web site. The site is updated at least monthly with new content. This student organization is trying to organize a “Walk & Roll” walking and wheelchair-a-thon and concert to benefit a local charity that provides free wheelchairs to those who need them. The proposed event will occur in March 2009. An event advisor is needed to help motivate the group to solicit sponsors, organize teams and secure a venue. Benefits: This position would be good for a person with interests in major event planning and organization advising. It would also be valuable for someone who would like to learn more about students with disabilities. Supervisors: Valerie Jones and Michelle Burke (Student Life) Commitment: Weekly meetings with the organization (usually Tuesday evenings). Other meetings and activities as needed. Responsibilities: o Set up weekly planning meetings with organization o Help the group set goals and action steps to create a new philanthropic event o Motivate and assist the group to secure venue, performer contracts, sponsors, promotions The SOC staff would like to update its online and in-person collection of resources related to Student Organization Development. Benefits: This position would be good for a person with interests in working with student organizations and student activities. This is also a low-pressure way to learn about Web site content management. The extern/intern would come away with a tangible work product to show potential employers. Responsibilities: o Meet with the SOC staff to create a desired list of resources o Research examples from other schools and collect GVSU resources that can be used o Update SOC Web site and in-house library of information o Create a training session that can be presented by any SOC staff member about how to locate appropriate resources Shadow the planning/implementation of events in 2008-09, so you can take a greater role with the events in 2009-10.
