Bart Merkle, Ed.D

Bart Merkle Dr. Bart Merkle serves as Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Grand Valley where he has been senior student affairs officer since his arrival. He came to GVSU in 1984 as the Dean of Students and an additional title was added when he was named Assistant Provost in 1989, Associate Provost in 1994 and Vice Provost in 1995. Previously, he served in several student affairs roles including: Acting Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Students at Tulane University; Associate Dean of Students, Assistant Dean of Students, Director of Career Planning & Placement and Hall Director at Kalamazoo College; and Admissions Counselor at Hope College.

Bart earned the BA degree with a major in political science from Hope College in 1971, and the MA and Ed.D. degrees in Counseling and Personnel Administration in Higher Education from Western Michigan University in 1973 and 1979 respectively. His teaching focuses on the EDG 653 Administration of Student Affairs Programs, EDG 685 Practicum/Graduate Field Experience and EDG 601 CSAL Internship courses.

Bart and his wife, Anne - an Associate Librarian at Grand Valley, have five grown children. They live in Allendale, MI where they enjoy breeding and raising Labrador retrievers.
