The Training Program, Part 3: Training Seminars . . .
Orientation is a crucial component of the internship process. An intensive orientation period occurs prior to the beginning of the Fall semester. Due to the Center's commitment in the area of community building, the interns' orientation is integrated into that of the Graduate Assistants of Student Services. Interns will be a part of this training program which will familiarize them with the members of the Grand Valley community, help them develop a greater understanding of the role of Student Affairs and student development, and provide a support network with other graduate students. During the Center's orientation, interns are given information on policies and procedures, physical facilities and equipment, programs, supervisory arrangements, and staffing. Orientation also addresses the areas of consultation and outreach, assessment, crisis intervention and cultural and lifestyle differences.
2. Clinical Seminar
A bi-weekly seminar entitled Clinical Seminar is facilitated by the Director of Clinical Services and the Training Director. This seminar uses a group / peer supervision model and focuses on case conceptualization, therapy process, possible therapeutic interventions, and clinical issues.
3. Supervision of Group Therapy
This seminar alternates with clinical seminar and focuses on video review and dicussion of intern's provision of group therapy, group process, dynamics and intervention.
4. Intern Seminar
Intern Seminar meets once a week during the internship year. The seminar focuses on applying information from the various seminars and workshops, discussing issues which arise during the internship, and providing contact with the Training Director.

6. Career Development Counseling
The Counseling Center provides training and seminar opportunities for interns in the theoretical and philosophical basis of common issues faced by students in making career decisions, career counseling and assessment. Seminar includes focus on application to current clients. Cultural and lifestyle differences impacting career decision-making and choices are examined in context with the university population.
7. Multicultural / Diversity Seminar
This seminar is designed to expose interns to a variety of cultures and diversities as well as integrate their knowledge into culturally appropriate interventions and treatment. Interns will develop awareness, sensitivity and skills for working professionally with diverse individuals, groups and communities of various cultural and personal background and characeristics defined as cultural, individual, role differences, including those based on age and gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, cultural, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, socioeconomic status and impact of social justice systems. Interns will also integrate self-reflection on their own privilege, culture and identities.
The assessment component includes sessions on conducting an intake interview, crisis intervention, assessment of potential harm to self and others, case conceptualization, assessment of mood disorder, and assessment of interpersonal style. In addition, the assessment component includes information on administration and interpretations of a variety of assessment instruments currently used at the Center with an emphasiss on therapeutic use of assessment with clients. These instruments include the MMPI-2, the 16 PF, the MCMI-II, PAI, and the TAT. The seminar also includes sessions on assessment of ethnic and special populations.
9. Consultation/Research Seminar
This seminar provides interns with an opportunity to explore consultation research interests and to develop a project related to Counseling Center issues. Upon completion of the project, interns will prepare an executive summary and orally present their findings to CCDC staff and the Division.

Interns: The Center views on-going evaluation as another primary component of the internship program. In addition to the informal feedback provided during supervision and training seminars, interns receive formal written feedback regarding their progress in competency development three times over the year (baseline, mid-year, and final). Training expectations and evaluation criteria are specified in the training manual interns receive at the start of the internship. The evaluated competencies align with the program goals and objectives delineated in Part 1. Interns are expected to achieve intermediate to advanced levels of competency. The competency evaluations are quite comprehensive and therefore, we do not complete additional training contracts and/or evaluations for individual academic programs (programs are sent copies of the mid-year and final evaluations).
Specific expectations, exit standards, and competency evaluation forms along with other administrative policies are contained in the Doctoral Internship Manual provided the first day of internship (or available upon request).
Training Program: Interns provide feedback to the program throughout their experience, but also have regularly scheduled meetings for such purpose along with a written program evaluation at the end of the internship and again two years post-internship.
