Alcohol / Drug Services

The Counseling and Career Development Center recognizes the importance of addressing addictions and substance abuse issues as a part of student's overall emotional and physical wellness.

The Center is a participant and sponsor of several programs and services.  Staff members also work closely with several departments and programs on campus to provide the most up-to-date and recognized treatment models for both prevention and intervention, including the Alert Labs and the campus Wellness Task Force.

The Center provides individual counseling and assessment, recovery and treatment information, and educational programs through Alcohol Campus Education and Services (ACES).

Individual Substance Abuse Counseling

The Counseling Center has two counselors, Wayne Kinzie and John Zaugra trained as certified addictions counselors who provide both assessment and treatment of addictions issues such as drinking and other drugs.

The Center has also added a licensed social worker, Mike Gillen, who has 20 years of experience working with the court systems and addictions issues.

Recovery Information and Treatment

The ACES office can provide information on recovery and maintaining "clean and sober" for those students who are looking for support during their recovery process.  ACES is also responsible for running the campus AA meetings.  For more information on the AA meetings on campus, you can contact the ACES office at www.gvsu.edu/aces or call (616) 331-2537.

Alcohol Campus Education (ACE) Program

There are several levels of the ACE programming, starting with the ACE Group.  The ACE Group workshop is designed for students with their first violation of the campus alcohol policy.  The workshop is coordinated by Eric Klingensmith and focuses on education vs. punishment or "preaching".  The goals of ACE is to raise awareness about the facts of alcohol, the legal issues, dangerous/binge drinking, personal safety, and the misperceptions around the use of alcohol.  Meetings are by referral only.  The sessions last for three hours and are offered one day a week at various dates and times throughout the year (summer schedule varies).

A briefer version of this presentation is available as an outreach program to the campus community.

Outreach Programs and Presentations

Several presentations and programs can be delivered by the ACES staff to a variety of audiences.  Please contact the ACES office to discuss programs for your group or class.
