Stipend and Benefits

The Grand Valley State University Pre-Doctoral Internship program is a 12-month internship. The program is funded for 4 doctoral-level interns from a clinical or counseling psychology graduate program. Each position carries a stipend of $21,000 plus on-campus housing or a $2000 housing stipend.

On-campus housing consists of a one or two bedroom apartment (2 bedrooms for interns with children) located in the Ravine Apartment complex.  The Ravine complex houses primarily Sophomores and Juniors.  The apartments are furnished with utilities, Internet, telephone, and cable TV included.

Note:  While on-campus housing offers the intern significant financial benefits, there are some potential drawbacks for interns to consider.  These include:  1) living among undergraduates, 2) the noise factor, 3) the potential to live near a client, and 4) living on-campus vs. away from campus.  Orientation training regarding managing multiple roles will address unique aspects of working in a center that is embedded and interdependent with the campus community.  This training will also include issues of specific relevance to interns living on campus.

The internship begins July 19, 2010 and is a 40-45 hour per week appointment.

The internship provides the following benefits:

1. Faculty/staff medical benefits.

2. Ten (10) days paid vacation (five days are designated to be taken at the end of the internship year).

3. National holidays (New Year's Eve Day, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day) and floating holidays between Christmas and New Year.

4. Each intern will receive an allotment of $300 for his/her professional development.  These monies are not to be used for dissertation or job interviewing experience.  If the intern wishes to attend the annual ACPA convention, the $300 can be used for the convention.

5.  Interns have access to all Center clerical, administrative, and support services.

6.  LIbrary privileges equivalent to professional staff.

7. Free use of the Academic Computing Center facilities.

8. Free use of the University Recreation Center. Grand Valley State University has excellent recreational facilities. Interns have the same privileges as other professional staff which include an opportunity to participate in the Wellness program (a comprehensive fitness program developed for staff and faculty), use of the faculty/staff locker room, and access to all indoor and outdoor facilities.
