Spectrum Health Innovations Partnership

Recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Engagement Initiative Award

Community Partner: Spectrum Health Innovations
Academic Department: School of Engineering

Through the Spectrum Health Innovations Partnership, engineering students work alongside medical professionals to design and develop new health care products and technologies. Teams of four or five students complete stages of the design process or solve a specific sub-problem. Subsequent teams integrate previous solutions into a product, refining devices or adding functionality as requested by medical professionals. At the end of each semester, faculty, students and Spectrum Health professionals review all work and determine next steps. Successful projects have gone beyond the classroom and moved towards commercialization, including 1 project that has been awarded a patent and 4 projects licensed to external companies.
