Beginning September 1st, 2013, ALL teachers (no matter when they received initial teaching certification) will be required to meet the following requirements to obtain a professional teaching certificate. NO ONE will be "grandfathered" into the requirements.
Applicants may complete the National Board Professional Teaching Standards Certification ( www.nbpts.org ) or meet the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) two-part requirements, Part A and Part B listed below:
It is recommened to wait at least two years before completing credits/hours required for professional certification.
Note: State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH) replaces State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEU)
Candidates for professional certification who have not yet had a provisional renewal must meet ONE of the following requirements :
Old SB-CEUs can still be used for professional certification and are recorded in the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS).
All credits/hours need to be completed within FIVE years of application for Professional Certification AND after the issuance of your initial provisional certificate. Credit hours options older than FIVE years will not count toward professional certification.

Once both Part A and B requirements are met, a professional certificate may be granted.
Educators who have already received a provisional renewal must complete additional credits/hours for professional certification or an additional renewal.
Teachers may apply for a provisional renewal if they have not met all requirements for the Professisonal Certificate within the five year validity of their INITIAL provisional certificate. Visit the Renewals page for more information.
