Susan Carson has dedicated her career to the work of peace and justice. A review of her work over the last 20 years reveals a commitment to a philosophy of education that centers on humanitarian values and the power and purpose of education in changing lives. Her teaching, whether in courses directly focused on diversity and inclusion or on other elements of education, incorporates a model of respect and empathic understanding of others. Her commitment to community-based teaching provides students with experiences situated in organizations advancing social justice. Colleagues note that Carson constantly seeks to improve her teaching and inclusive practices. Students report that their worlds are expanded in numerous ways, including her sharing her international Fulbright experiences or by virtue of the excellence she models in the classroom.
Carson is one of five College of Education faculty who received awards for excellence at GVSU’s 2017 Faculty Awards Convocation on February 2, 2017.
