2017 University Outstanding Teacher Award
Mary Bair, Ph.D.

Associate Professor in Special Education, Foundations, and Technology; joined GVSU in 2005
University Awards for Excellence

A reiterative process of teaching, reflection, and research embodies Mary Bair's philosophy and work as a teacher-scholar. Colleagues in the College of Education respect the powerful ways in which Bair models for faculty and students the central role of reflecting on one's own thinking. Her ability to engage students while demonstrating expertise as a fellow learner in the process, her longstanding record of teaching excellence, and her scholarship are inspirational to those around her. Students revere her ability to teach deconstruction techniques given the broad range of research available. Subsequent construction revealing essential evidence prepares them to become leaders with a confidence they did not expect. In the words of a colleague, "Bair ... makes me proud to teach at GVSU. She has high expectations of herself and her students, but she calls these students to these expectations in a way that dignifies the learner and enhances the learning experience."

Bair is one of five College of Education faculty who received awards for excellence at GVSU’s 2017 Faculty Awards Convocation on February 2, 2017.
