Focusing on Technology

The GTC staff at has made a strong commitment to training our students on the use of technology in their classrooms.  We strive to keep up to date on current trends in Educational Technology and to integrate these new technologies into our classes.  In addition to in-class use we offer special training sessions covering a variety of technologies.

Smart Board Training

Every year GTC students at Grand Valley are trained in the use of "Interactive White Board" technology.  Our student teachers learn the mechanics of using the whiteboard and creating interactive materials for their classrooms.  In addition they receive instruction on how to integrate this tool into their curriculum.

This partnership allows GVSU student teachers free unlimited access to educational videos and resources on the PBS LearningMedia website. Teachers can use PBS LearningMedia to assign class projects, have students create interactive digital storyboards, download and share lessons and videos, and identify teaching resources based on content standards. Due to the partnership with the GVSU COE, West Michigan is in the top 5 users of PBS LearningMedia nationwide.

Ensemble Video

Ensemble is used in a number of ways throughout the College of Education and is an integral part of our online and hybrid courses. The video tools provides faculty and students with the ability to record and view course material in their own time, conduct virtual classroom observations, and add annotations over video. One of the key features is the security of Ensemble, which integrates with Blackboard and provides a single location for faculty and students to store videos.

The GVSU College of Education was featured on the Ensemble Video website, spotlighting our use of video technology in the classroom.

Swivl Technology

Grand Valley State University's College of Education began offering an intensive one-year teacher training program entirely online. With mentors required to evaluate student-teachers in the field in regions beyond Western Michigan, GVSU needed a way to better manage cost in money and time spent.
