Mitch Roth Awarded the John Shontz Scholarship from the Waddell-Treanor Native Plants Endowment.


The Waddell Treanor Native Plants Endowment was established at Grand Valley State University in 2008 with the funds from a very generous bequest from Barbara Waddell and Arlene Treanor. These funds are to be used for the purpose of getting young people involved in conservation of native plants, promoting growth of native plants, and promoting use of native plants in landscaping and gardening.

CMB Faculty Dr. Margaret Dietrich Receives PEW  Teaching Excellence Award for 2011



Pew Teaching Excellence Awards were established to recognize outstanding teachers from around the university and are presented at the Faculty Award Convocation each year. Nominees are selected by students, alumni, other faculty, or academic units.


This award is based on the following criteria, which are not ranked by order of importance, nor exclusive:



  • Uses multiple approaches in classroom/laboratory instruction and evaluation

  • Stimulates intellectual curiosity in students

  • Shows evidence of being current in field/discipline

  • Demonstrates commitment to student learning as instructor, role model, or positive influence on career development of students

  • Reflects on past teaching experience to improve current practice

Cell and Molecular Biology major, Doug Peterson was one of the students to receive in the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship.



The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship program seeks to:

Increase both the number of STEM teachers and the quality of secondary-level STEM instruction, which will likely boost high school graduation and college attendance and completion rates.


The Woodrow Wilson Foundation works to redesign curricula to improve teacher preparation and create clinical experiences in schools to help teacher candidates succeed with diverse populations.

 

The Fellowship helps retain high-quality teachers by ensuring that their preparation is aligned with the skills teachers need to succeed in high-need schools, including significant teaching experience. Upon receiving their master’s degree, Fellows are assisted in securing teaching placements within districts that have strong leaders, experienced teacher-mentors, and pre-existing relationships with participating teacher education programs. Every Fellow receives ongoing, intensive mentoring and assessment focused on the first three years of teaching, as well as opportunities for continuing education.




Grand Valley State University is one of six Michigan universities chosen to participate in this innovative program to prepare science and mathematics secondary teachers.
