Major Requirements

Completion of a major in Cell and Molecular Biology requires the following:

 1.General university degree requirements as identified in the General Academic Regulations section of the catalogue.

2. The Cell and Molecular Biology Core Requirements (number of credits in parentheses). To complete the major in CMB, students must declare their major and must earn at least a C+ grade in each of the following courses to graduate:

You may take CHM 241/ 242 to fulfill your Organic Chemistry requirement OR CHM 245 / 246 in place of CHM 241 (Organic Chemistry I) AND CHM 247 / 248 in place of CHM 242 (Organic Chemistry II)

4. A choice between two math/physics sequences:

Option A (13 credits):
MTH 125 (3) - Survey of Calculus, and
PHY 220 (5) - General Physics I (prereq MTH 123)
and
PHY 221 (5) - General Physics II
OR
Option B (19 credits):
MTH 201 (5) - Calculus & Analytic Geometry I, and
MTH 202 (4) - Calculus & Analytic Geometry II, and
PHY 230 (5) - Principles of Physics I, and
PHY 231 (5) - Principles of Physics II

*MTH 201 with PHY220 & PHY221 fulfills the math/physics sequence

 

5. A choice between an independent research experience at a private industry or research lab or at GVSU:

CMB 499 (3) - Independent Research in CMB or Internship

 

6. Electives
With the required courses listed above, most students will need additional credits to satisfy the 120 credit hour baccalaureate degree requirement. These additional credits will be comprised of electives. The elective credits are unrestricted; students may choose whatever elective courses they wish. For those students who desire more science in their CMB curriculum, the following is a list of suggested electives.
