Major Requirements

Completion of a major in Cell and Molecular Biology requires the following:

1.General university degree requirements as identified in the General Academic Regulations section of the catalogue.

2. The Cell and Molecular Biology Core Requirements (number of credits in parentheses). To complete the major in CMB, students must declare their major and by the time of graduation must earn at least a C+ grade in each of the following courses to graduate:

BIO120, BIO375, BIO376, CHM115, CHM116, CHM241, CHM242, CMB250.

BIO 376 (1) - Genetics Laboratory

CMB 405 (4) - Cell and Molecular Biology

CMB 406 (2) - Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory

CMB 426 (3) - Nucleic Acids Laboratory CHM 115 (5) - Principles of Chemistry I

CHM 116 (5) - Principles of Chemistry II

**CHM 241 (4) - Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences I

**CHM 242 (4) - Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences II

**CHM 245 (3) - Principles of Organic Chemistry I

**CHM 246 (1) - Principles of Organic Chemistry I Lab

**CHM 247 (3) - Principles of Organic Chemistry II

**CHM 248 (1) - Principles of Organic Chemistry II Lab

**You may take CHM 241/ 242 to fulfill your Organic Chemistry requirement OR CHM 245 / 246 in place of CHM 241 (Organic Chemistry I) AND CHM 247 / 248 in place of CHM 242 (Organic Chemistry II)

3. A choice between two microbiology courses:

Option A: BIO 357 (4) - Environmental Biology OR Option B: BMS 212 (3) - Introductory Microbiology, and BMS 213 (1) - Laboratory in Microbiology

4. A choice between two math/physics sequences:

MTH 201, MTH 202, PHY 230, PHY 231

Or MTH 125, PHY 220, PHY 221 fulfills the math/physics sequence

5. A choice between an independent research experience at a private industry or research lab or at GVSU:

CMB 499 (3) - Independent Research in CMB or Internship (CMB 490)
