Matt Sekosan Selected to Coach GVSU Women's D1 Hockey Team

Grand Valley State University Club Sports has hired Matt Sekosan as the next head coach for the ACHA Division 1 Women’s Ice Hockey team. Sekosan was most recently the head coach for the Davenport University ACHA Division 1 Women’s Hockey team. A Sterling Heights, MI native, Sekosan also served as assistant coach for the Davenport’s Men’s D1 Ice Hockey team along with stints at Forest Hills Central High School and Fox Motors hockey club. While supporting the west Michigan hockey community, Sekosan continues to work with the Bandits Goalie School coordinating goaltender development with all levels of goalies.

In a statement, Acting Director of Recreation & Wellness Mike Przydzial said, “The future is surely bright for GVSU Women’s Ice Hockey under Coach Sekosan’s leadership. I was thrilled to get the call from him accepting our offer as I know the great things he will do for our program given his experience in the sport and ties to the hockey community.”

After attending Sterling Heights High School, Matt played junior hockey and collegiately as a goalie on the Davenport University Men’s D1 team in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While playing at Davenport University, he was a member of the school’s 2011 D1 ACHA National Championship team. A goalie, Sekosan appeared in 65 games with multiple years of over .900 save percentages for the Panthers.

Coach Sekosan expresses his feelings on the new opportunity with Grand Valley, “I’m excited to get to work in re-establishing the women’s hockey program as one of the nations best.  I’m looking forward to getting to work with our returning and incoming players as we near the start of the season. I’d like to thank Mike, Bri, and Carl for giving me the opportunity, time to anchor up!”

Matt earned his Bachelors of Business Administration degree in Sport Management, graduating with honors in 2012, and an MBA in Business Management, 2014, both from Davenport University. Sekosan resides in west Michigan with his wife, Lindsey, and their dog Ryder.

“We are super excited to welcome in new leadership and can’t wait to build our program!” shares Senior athlete, Katie Tauer. “We are looking forward to working hard and getting back on the ice together this season, and we can’t wait to see what Coach Sekosan has in store for the future of GV Women’s hockey.”

The GVSU women hockey athletes are excited to return to competition this fall after a year of restricted competition and travel. Stay up to date at gvsu.edu/clubsports.
