ABOUT

Feb. 1 - Feb. 29, 2012

The El Cap. Challenge is a new endurance climbing challenge designed to push climbers of all abilities to their limit.  In teams of two, GVSU students will have to opportunity to see if they have what it takes to climb the equivalent vertical footage to summit the Nose route of El Capitan (2,900 ft or 1,450 ea.).

Once the challenge begins, team progress may be tracked on the El Capitan chart located outside the Climbing Center main entrance.

REGISTRATION
Free

Teams may register in one of two categories:

Recreational (non-competitve)
This category is designed for people who love to climb without the burden of following a specific route or for those who may not yet developed the technique to consistently climb them.  Regardless of your ability, this category is great for those who want to see if they have what it takes to summit El Cap. without the added pressure of competition.

Rock Star (competitive)
This category is designed for the experienced climber with a competitive spirit.  Along the way, teams must complete routes such as the King Swing & Great Roof which are modeled after pitches of the same name on the actual climb.  Teams will race to the top not only for the glory of being first but also the opportunity to plant their team's flag on the summit.  (We'll hang a flag of your team's design in the Climbing Center for all to see)

Please view the Official Rules for details of each category

Registration opens Monday, January 8th.  To register, please visit the Climbing Center during any open hours.  Both team members must be present to register.

Due the potential for developing over-use injuries, this challenge is not recommended for people who have never climbed before or who have just started.

PRIZES & AWARDS

Teams in both categories will be eligible to win prizes in a weekly raffle drawing.

Teams in the Rock Star category will compete for various team awards which include:  First to Summit, Most Vertical Feet in a Day, & Fewest Sessions to Summit.

All who complete the challenge will receive a certificate to document their achievement.
