Second Annual Barbara L. Flaschenriem Classics Scholarship Announced

The Department of Classics is pleased to announce that Ms. Kendall Farkas has been designated the recipient of the Barbara L. Flaschenriem Endowed Classics Scholarship for 2015-16.

Kendall is a rising senior who has held leadership roles in the Classics Society and the Eta Sigma Phi honor society. In 2014 she was awarded the nationally competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in support of summer study in Italy.

She writes: "My goal for Classics is to take my passion for the Classical world and give it to others. Whether it is in the classroom or through student organizations, I share my passions and encourage others to pursue what they love as well. ...It was not until I studied abroad in Italy this past summer that I finally discovered how I can achieve this goal.

"Participating in a field school this summer was a huge game changer and placed me on my current path. Upon returning, I officially declared Latin Secondary Education as my career goal and am beginning to look for prospective graduate programs to receive my Masters of Arts in Teaching."

Professor Flaschenriem was deeply invested in expanding access to University education for promising and committed students of Classics. We are absolutely delighted that these aspirations are being fulfilled by so many talented and deserving students.
