Grand Valley student receives DeKarman Fellowship

Abigail DeHart, a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Frederik Meijer Honors College at Grand Valley, has been named the recipient of a prestigious 2014-15 DeKarman Fellowship.
DeHart, a double major in classics and philosophy, is one of just eight undergraduate and graduate students nationwide to receive the fellowship for the next academic year. The award provides $14,000 for undergraduate students. DeHart is currently studying abroad in Varanasi, India as a Padnos International Scholar.
Competition for the DeKarman Fellowship is extreme, with awards extended to students enrolled at top-tier institutions across the U.S. Eight awards were given in 2013-14 out of more than 400 applicants.
DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States.

The Josephine De Karman Fellowship Trust was established in 1954 by the late Dr. Theodore Von Karman, world-renowned aeronautics expert and teacher and first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, in memory of his sister, Josephine, who passed away in 1951. The purpose of this Fellowship program is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect Professor Von Karman’s high standards.
