1)      Suggested Language for Ads

Following our unit head meeting last week, Sue Lindrup has provided two examples of possible language for search ads:

“Ph.D. in ____ by August 2009 strongly preferred (ABD candidates will be considered for hire at the instructor level, in which case the Ph.D. must be completed by April 2010);”

“Ph.D. in _______ strongly preferred (ABD candidates will be considered for hire at the instructor level.)”

You don’t have to give a specific date by which the Ph.D. must be done unless you want to be that specific.  Any agreement about completion of a Ph.D. (or other terminal degree) should be outlined in the appointment letter.

3)      Call for Papers- 2009 Art & Science of Aging Conference – “ MATTERS OF THE HEART”- message from Dean Kimboko

We are now opening the Call for Papers for the annual Art & Science of Aging conference, scheduled for February 20th.  I hope that you will widely distribute this call for papers to researchers, practitioners and faculty members whose work focuses on aging.  We anticipate a lively and interesting conference ranging from matters of the heart  - intimacy, relationships, poetry, as well as the most recent research on maintaining a healthy heart and treatments of heart conditions...

Please note that there is a parallel call to faculty members to mentor student research posters on aging-related topics...

See attachments for further details.  (Att: Call for Papers, Att: Student posters)

Date: Wednesday, Sept. 17th
Time: 9 AM-3 PM
Location: Cook Carillion Tower

Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license or your GVSU I.D.

5)      Time to Graduation – Message from Dean Antczak

Here’s a heads-up for everyone. We will continue to discuss Time to Graduation at the October 1 Unit Heads Meeting. As you’ll recall from last week’s Unit Heads Meeting, I asked each of you to have conversations with your faculty as to what additional/different data from Philip Batty (the “Degree completers by program” spreadsheet) you need.  It’s important that your unit conversations about this topic take place in time for you to be prepared for the continuing Unit Head discussion on Oct. 1.
