2.    “50th @ Noon Lecture Series” (attachment) – John Kilbourne

This series is part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  I have led the efforts to organize this important series of presentations. The Series is designed specifically for STUDENTS, faculty & staff, and features the "Creators" of GVSU.  Feel free to share the attached flyer.

3.    Allies & Advocates training  - Allies & Advocates Program

Allies & Advocates exist to offer support and resources in a safe environment for members of the GVSU community concerned with issues of sexual orientation. Training will be held on Friday, October 29, 1-4pm, Laker Village South. Tell your colleagues! Sign up is on the HR website, Excellence Series. Graduate students by permission, email MJ Thiel (thielm@gvsu.edu)

Session description: Workshop presented by M.J. Thiel, Counseling & Career Development Center - Grand Rapids.  This session will introduce participants to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community and provide the information and resources needed to be an ally. Topics include terminology, the use of inclusive language, tools for sensitive interactions with members of the GLBT community, and a student panel. No prior training or knowledge is necessary and all those interested in being an ally are welcome to attend. Those who complete this training will receive the Allies & Advocates flyer for posting in their office as well as inclusion in the campus-wide network for allies.  Students should contact M.J. Thiel at thielm@gvsu.edu to register.

4.    Printer Cartridge Scam – Fred

Please be aware it is that time of year when we receive phone calls to purchase printer cartridges. Sales people are not to be contacting department offices to sell product. We remind you to work with the Office of Procurement (X12280) or through the University approved “office depot” for your office needs.

These scams seem to come in waves, and usually they are directed at Department Coordinators. They are now targeting department coordinators and secretaries, but also the unit chairs.

If you receive such a phone call, refer the caller to Chris Hernandez (Office of Procurement) at X12280.

5.    Nontraditional Student Recognition Week – Jan Robinson

Believe it or not "Nontraditional Student Recognition Week" is right around the corner.  At the National level, the "NTS Recognition Week" begins Sunday, November 7 and ends Saturday, November 13.

During that week (11/8 - 11/12) at Grand Valley, the "Nontraditional Student Committee" would like to raise awareness of our nontraditional students by hanging banners, setting up tables with refreshments, information brochures, little gifts of appreciation (such as pens, bookmarks, and note books) and to just offer friendship and a place to help develop some campus life comradely among our nontraditional students.

This year, we also want to bring to light the wonderful campus activities planned for that week (and throughout the academic year) that may be of particular interest to our nontraditional students such as the "Career Services Resume Workshop" or the "Time Management: Tips for Taking Control" event.

Again, this year, we need donations from Grand Valley's departments to ensure that we can offer something special to our nontraditional students throughout their week of recognition.   The names of those departments that donate will be proudly displayed at every table during that week and an itemized list of expenses will be made available for those who donate and need something for their records.

Please let me know if you can donate to this worthwhile event.

Thank you for your time.

~Jan, CLAS Academic Advising Center
