1. Jewish Holidays – message from Shel Kopperl
1. Jewish Holidays – message from Shel Kopperl
As an active member of the West Michigan Jewish community, I wish to call to your attention the fact that the major two Jewish holidays of the year, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, will be falling on the evening of Monday, September 29, the day of Tuesday, September 30 (and Wed., October 1 for more traditional Jews); and on the evening of Wednesday, October 8 and the day of Thursday, October 9.
I and the rest of the Jewish faculty and staff as well as our Jewish students would appreciate your assistance in encouraging instructors, coaches and advisors to be understanding of student requests to attend religious services on these occasions and to allow them to make up missed work wherever possible. The area Jewish congregations are offering their hospitality and opening their places of worship to our students who may not be able to travel to their homes to celebrate the holidays with their families. Not unlike Christmas and Easter, these are the two holidays where all Jews, regardless of how little they may attend formal worship services throughout the year, feel a special need to attend services on these most holy of days.
Thanks for your support. Shel Kopperl
