1.     Syllabus statement related to disability accommodations-- Mary Schutten

As faculty prepare their syllabi for the upcoming semester, it may be helpful to encourage them to include, if not already included, a statement related to disability accommodations. This type of clear statement was suggested by Jeanne Kirkpatrick in her presentation on the new changes to the American with Disabilities Act. Some samples are provided below:

Statement on Disability Accommodations:
Example A

Any student who requires accommodation because of a physical or learning disability must contact Disability Support Services (http://www.gvsu.edu/dss) at 616-331-2490 as soon as possible.  After you have documented your disability, please make an appointment or see me during office hours to discuss your specific needs.

Example B

Any student needing academic accommodations beyond those given to the entire class please be advised that the University’s Office of Disability  Support Services (DSS, ext. 12490) is available to all GVSU students. It is the student’s responsibility to request assistance from DSS.

3. Adjunct Graduate Faculty Application Form (attachment) – Gary Stark

UAS approved the policy for Adjunct Faculty involved in graduate education for GVSU this past year.  In this policy, it is the responsibility of the Office of Graduate Studies to collect information about the qualifications of all adjunct faculty to teaching graduate/professional courses or supervising graduate students in clinical settings and identify exceptions to the standards and policies to be shared with the respective college deans and the Provost.

If there is an adjunct faculty member in your unit who is scheduled to teach a graduate course this Fall, please complete the attached form and submit it to the CLAS Dean’s office by Friday, August 20.

4. Time to Update Faculty Web Pages – Mary Schutten

This is a great time of year for faculty to update their personal web pages to contain current information such as any changes to their rank, office hours, office location, research interests, publications, awards, pictures, and links.

5. Rapidly Approaching Award Deadlines on Friday October 1st (attachment)-- Message from Stephen Matchett, Chair of CLAS  Faculty Development Committee (FDC)
