Please note that this year's Distinguished Alumni-in-Residence Celebration is scheduled for October 9 and 10, 2008.  Following the usual order of events, Thursday, October 9th will be a day in which guests are honored by their hosting departments.  The annual CLAS recognition luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10th at the Alumni House.  

As established last year, due to the increasing number of individuals that have expressed interest in participating in the Distinguished Alumni-in-Residence Program, we will no longer attempt to showcase alumni from all CLAS academic departments in a single year.  Instead, departments will alternate years, as doing so will allow our guests to be honored in a more appropriate manner.  Departments eligible for participation in the Fall 2008 Distinguished Alumni-in-Residence Celebration include:

1. School of Communications (COM)

2. Geography and Planning (GPY)

3. Writing (WRT)

4. Biomedical Sciences (BMS)

5. Statistics (STA)

6. Mathematics (MTH)

7. Art and Design (ART)

8. Sociology (SOC)

11. Physics (PHY).

Departments eligible for the Fall 2009 academic year are as follows:

A website consisting of an electronic application for this event will be provided to you soon.  Upon receipt of the e-form, please fill out all areas as completely as possible.  The deadline for submitting the e-form will be Friday, August 29th.  The short biographies must be completed no later than Monday, September 22nd.  In the meantime, please contact potential honorees and begin making preparations for your guests to attend.  Contact Keesha Walker at walkerk@gvsu.edu with any questions that you may have.

 

3) We have had many requests for orientation dates for new faculty. Attached you will find the list supplied by the Provost Office and our list as well. (attachment 1   attachment 2)

 

4) Website Updates for Accreditation- Fred

In preparation for fall, and to make your unit look good for the accreditors, please review your departmental website for any needed updates.  In particular, please

·       assist us in effectively launching the new CLAS Academic Advising Center by replacing references or links you may have to the SMART Center, the Arts & Humanities Teacher Certification Office or the Psychology Advising Center with the new CLAS Academic Advising Center URL:  http://gvsu.edu/clasadvising/  .  Their new site will launch soon and the link is live now.  Please take care to put the full official name of the new entity:  CLAS Academic Advising Center.

·       please, please, please post your strategic plan if you have not already done so.

·       update faculty lists, achievements, curricular changes, physical addresses, most recent department newsletters/journals.  A quick spot check of faculty pages tells me that some of you are selling yourselves short--books described as "pending" are actually already on the shelf, grants awarded, offices taken on and so forth. 

·       remove or replace outdated material.

·       please add a link to the CLAS website (www.gvsu.edu/clas)

And the CLAS Student Advisory Council entreats you to update faculty photos when practical (they noted a lot more grey hair in the classroom than on the websites!). 

Your attention to this "housekeeping" well prior to the NCA visit will help us all to look as good as we really are.  The CLAS website will be undergoing a similar "sprucing up".
