  1. Registration Coverage on Friday, May 6, 2011 – Gary Stark

On Friday, over 90 transfer students with a CLAS major will be attempting to register. On Thursday and Friday, you or a delegate must be available to authorize closed class permits for transfer students. If the Advising Center is not able to contact someone in your department, I will make the decision. Thank you for your cooperation.

2. Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR) Calls for Abstracts and Proposals

Call for Student Posters for the 2011 Pennsylvania Historical Association Annual Meeting:

The Program Committee invites proposals for the 2011 Pennsylvania Historical Association (PHA) Annual Meeting hosted by the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on October 13-15. Recognizing the importance of introducing the next generation of scholars and teachers to the best practices of the profession, PHA is pleased to announce the inclusion of a poster session for undergraduate research at its 2011 Annual Meeting. Proposals must list a faculty mentor and may include up to three students per proposal. The proposals may consist of topics focused on any historical theme, period, or methodological approach related to the Mid-Atlantic region. Students will be expected to conduct original, primary source-based research, preferably in an archival setting, during the course of their project along with significant secondary source analysis. The committee will also consider projects that address innovative techniques for teaching Pennsylvania History at the K-12 level. Research for the project need not be completed by the May 15 application deadline, but the proposal abstract should convey a clear understanding of the historical and scholarly context of the specific subject matter. The program committee will inform applicants and faculty mentors of their proposal's status no later than June 15, with a project completion check to be confirmed by September 15. Student participants are required to be PHA members at the time of the conference (note: there is a special PHA student membership rate of $30.00).

DEADLINE: May 15, 2011. For additional information visit:

3. 2011 Collegiate Inventors Competition Now Accepting Entries

The Collegiate Inventors Competition has recognized, rewarded, and encouraged hundreds of students to share their inventive ideas with the world. The Competition promotes exploration in invention, science, engineering, technology, and other creative endeavors and provides a window on the technologies from which society will benefit in the future. Each year up to 12 finalists in Graduate and Undergraduate Divisions receive an all-expenses paid trip to present their work to a panel of expert judges in Washington, D.C. In 2010, the top Graduate prize was $15,000 and the top Undergraduate Prize was $10,000. Other prizes are awarded to select finalists. Academic advisors of each winning entry also receive a cash award.

The deadline is June 24, 2011. For additional information visit:

4. Presidential Honor Roll- last call (attachment) Mary Schutten

As the air clears from registering final grades, there may be a person or two who might wish to include the service learning work that he/she does. We are still accepting this data through the end of next week. We would love to have any who wish to be included to do so. Thank you for all you do for our students!
