1.            GVSU President in national sustainability Webcast

Grand Valley State University is increasingly known as a leader in the sustainability movement, and on Feb. 11, Grand Valley State University President Thomas J. Haas will participate in a national Webcast to discuss how colleges and universities can approach sustainability from a policy perspective.

The Webcast is sponsored by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges and the Society for College and University Planning. The program is designed to provide an understanding of sustainability issues in higher education and how governing boards can work together with administration and executive staff to be informed leaders about sustainability. Participants will learn how trustees can engage effectively and appropriately on sustainability at a policy level, how sustainability can relate to institutional mission and strategic planning, and how it can become a regular part of a board's long-term agenda.

Other panelists include: Tony Cortese, president of Second Nature; Leith Sharpe, a visiting scientist in the Harvard School of Public Health and formerly the sustainability coordinator at Harvard University; California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, a trustee at the California State University and University of California Systems; and Kathleen McKinney, chair of the Board of Trustees at Furman University. The Webcast will be moderated by Rich Novak of the Association of Governing Boards.

NOTE: The Webcast will be Feb. 11 at noon. Two viewing locations are set at Grand Valley: Room 2263 in the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus and room 136E in the DeVos Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. The Grand Valley viewing locations are free and open to the public.

AWRI is now accepting applications for the internships and scholarships. See criteria, applications, and deadline information attached.

3.            AAC&U Engaging Departments Institute Unit Head Opportunity

Associate Dean Schutten will be attending this institute (July 8-12, 2009) and we would like faculty and/or unit heads from four other CLAS units to join her. Information about this valuable institute can be found below. If you or a faculty member in your unit is interested, please contact Cindy Laug by March 16.

With the support of the Teagle Foundation, and as part of its ongoing work in Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP), AAC&U has been engaged in a year-long planning process to develop a new summer institute for campus faculty and department chairs.  The purpose of the institute is to support the development of leadership within and across departments for strengthening and assessing students’ liberal learning.

The Engaging Departments Institute will provide campus teams of academic administrators, department chairs, and faculty with an intensive, structured time to advance their plans to foster, assess, and improve student learning within departments and across the institution. Recognizing that most faculty identify strongly with their discipline and department, and students are engaged in more complex and sophisticated practice of liberal learning as they complete their majors, the institute builds from those academic “homes” toward effective educational leadership and intentional collaboration among departments to achieve program and institution-wide learning outcomes consistently and at high levels.

The Institute will concentrate on 1) leadership for learning within and among departments 2) assessments for achieving and improving essential outcomes, and 3) preparing for educational effectiveness by identifying and then replacing barriers with aligned effective practices.

Campus teams attending the Institute will have extensive opportunities to work as a group, with other teams, and with the experienced faculty/consultants who are available throughout the Institute.

4.            Candide – tickets are now on sale for the Valentine’s Day Weekend- offering

2 for 1 pricing!

Valentine's Day Weekend shows on Friday 13 7:30, Saturday 14 7:30, Sunday 15 2:00 PM at Louis Armstrong Theatre.

Featuring the legendary score by Leonard Bernstein, Candide is part sophisticated opera, and part wacky screwball comedy with shades of Monty Python.  This funny irreverent satire is the perfect musical expression of Voltaire's novel.  It's a tongue-in-cheek send-up of optimistic philosophies.
