1. Revised Institutional Analysis Website – message from Provost Office

How would you like to find out how many students are enrolled in classes on the Pew Campus without making a phone call or sending an e-mail?  Thanks to the new Institutional Analysis website you can find this and much more!  Two information/training seminars will be offered this semester to help you utilize this site to its full potential.

Wednesday, November 11
3:00 - 4:00 p.m.
203A DeVos Center
Pew Grand Rapids Campus

Thursday, November 12
10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
111 Henry Hall
Allendale Campus

Both sessions are open to all faculty and staff, seating is limited.  If there is enough interest, more sessions will be held next semester.

For more information or to register, please call Becky Beechler at ext. 18722 or email at beechleb@gvsu.edu.

2. Midterm Grade Reports- Mary Schutten

The midterm grade process is a time for students to determine their progress in a course. Student can then seek out appropriate resources as needed. Midterm grades are reported for all freshmen, those on academic probation, and in jeopardy of dismissal.

While reviewing the midterm grade reports of students who had a GPA below 2.0, some of the midterm grades listed for various students were listed as an Incomplete (I). Incomplete (I) grades are final grades that also require accompanying paperwork. They are not intended for use in midterms. Please be sure to clarify this with all instructors who report grades. Thank you very much for your help.

3.   H1N1 Vaccine—Message from Jon Jellema

As you know, GVSU will make available the H1N1 vaccine at no charge; however, it is now clear that the initial supply of the vaccine we receive will not nearly cover the demand.

We continue to monitor the number of cases of H1N1 reported on campus and have noticed an increase in the last couple of weeks.  Should the number reach a point where, say, 15% of our students are out sick, we will consider other measures. In the meantime, I'd recommend for all a review of the H1N1 protocol found at

We're telling anyone with flu-like symptoms to stay home and follow the CDC guidelines: i.e., stay away from classes and campus activities for at least 24 hours after the fever has ended without use of fever-reducing medications.

Since that is the advice being given, the Provost's office is also urging professors to be understanding and not  require a doctor's slip from students who stay away from classes.

Finally, just FYI, custodial staff will not be doing special sanitizing of classrooms because sanitizing will not reduce the spread; hand washing will.

4. Last Out-of-the-Box Event – message from Grace Coolidge

CLAS Faculty are invited to participate in the last Out-of-the-Box event being offered this fall or to attend the Faculty Forum for an hour long discussion of the draft Standards and Criteria for Personnel Evaluation that were announced at the beginning of the semester.  A copy of the draft standards is located on your Blackboard site under CLAS Faculty.

We encourage faculty from all disciplines to participate.  If you are a senior faculty member with lots of experience or a junior faculty member who is working your way through the review process, we would very much like to hear from you.  The Out-of-the-Box events provide an intense small group discussion and a great opportunity to interact with your CLAS colleagues and hear a variety of perspectives on the draft standards.  The Faculty Forum is an hour-long discussion that does not require advance registration.

Faculty Forum:  Monday, November 9, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Kirkhof Center 1142 (no registration required)

Out-of-the-Box Workshop:  Friday, November 20, 11:00-1:00 (lunch included)

5. A reminder about flexibility in absence policies – message from Fred

Especially in view of the first death of one of our students from H1N1, it's a good time to remind your faculty to flexible about absences due to illness.  For faculty's own sakes, as well as that of their students, we should all avoid having such rigid policies--or inadvertent outcomes of policies--that genuinely sick students feel obligated to attend class.  I ask all unit heads to speak clearly with their faculty, reminding them about the President's and Provost's expressed positions about absence policies during this outbreak.
