For Faculty

1. Getting the School Year Off to a Good Start for Students in Our Community

In the last year, many units have contributed to the academic success of students in their own ways.  For instance, the Dean’s Office helped a student in the GVSU ESP program to make ends meet so that he could continue his education.  Other units have provided educational toys, made participation in activities possible for disabled young people, or contributed to their departmental scholarship funds—to name just a few.  Please feel free to share news of your unit’s efforts with us—they constitute just one of your many kinds of community engagement.

Sue Sloop of GVSU Health & Wellness would like to draw your attention to one such campaign to help some area elementary schools with needed supplies: www.gvsu.edu/service/StuffTheBus

2. FTLC and CSCE Awards (attachment)

The deadline for awards is October 1stPlease encourage the faculty members in your unit to begin the nomination process.  David Stark

3. Plan to Participate in the Annual Majors (and Minors) Fair (attachment)

This annual November event is a wonderful resource for students and an opportunity for units to share all the great things they do. Please host a unit table at this event, and, if you can and choose to do so, contribute some funds for the food and advertising.

Cordially,

Mary C. Schutten, PED
Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

4. Curriculum Development Reminders

Here are two curriculum development reminders that should help proposals move more smoothly through the review process. Please share with your proposal authors and unit curriculum committees:

The University Curriculum Committee (UCC) has provided the expectations for the syllabus of record for proposal submission. This link http://www.gvsu.edu/cms3/assets/66FDB529-EC51-DDBF-096EF6EFB7879DAA/UCC/ucc2011_12/00_sorguidelines2011.pdf provides current UCC expectations for the syllabus of record as well as its purpose. The concept of a blueprint for all faculty who may need to design a course syllabus is especially important.

The Budget Impact statement on the Curriculum Resource Statement should contain a complete explanation of how the unit will meet the resource needs. The directions state: Describe how the total resource needs (including faculty workload implications, expertise, etc...) for this course will affect the Unit's budget. Please be sure to include the cascade of actions that will occur to accommodate the course changes or additions of the proposal. Some units make the unit head an editor of the proposal so she/he can complete that portion of the proposal.

Cordially,

Mary C. Schutten, PED
Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
