Unit Head and Faculty Weekly Mailing 7-9-13
For Unit Heads
Effective July 1, 2013, the name of the Department of Music has been changed to the Department of Music and Dance.
Faculty are invited to attend a local conference on July 23 at no charge, and those who participate will receive a $200 professional development grant from the Community Service Learning Center.
The 4th Annual Collegiate Network Summer Summit Tuesday, July 23, 2013 8:15-3:00 p.m. Eberhard Center The Summer Summit establishes an opportunity for networking and building partnerships between nonprofit and higher education sectors in West Michigan. Through presentations and networking sessions, the Summit will connect educational resources from area colleges/universities to local nonprofit organizations, so they can engage effectively with student volunteers. The Summit is cohosted by the GVSU Community Service Learning Center and the Johnson Center for Philanthropy. Faculty will benefit from the information presented about engaging students in effective volunteer experiences, learning about the local needs of nonprofits in our community, and from the direct networking opportunity. Additionally, the summit participants will be provided with a time to brainstorm opportunities to engage students (service learning projects, one-time volunteer events, internships, etc.) toward the end of the conference and it would be especially valuable for faculty from various disciplines to be present to engage in dialogue. The agenda for the conference can be found at www.summersummit.eventbrite.com, and faculty who wish to attend should contact Valerie Jones at email@example.com for free registration and the professional development award no later than July 19.

New pedagogies and technologies (such as blended and flipped courses, online learning, social media, MOOCs, and mobile learning) are either already impacting or likely to increasingly impact teaching and learning in your disciplines. An opportunity to explore such strategies and their impacts is The Teaching Professor Technology Conference from October 4-6, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia. Details are available at www.teachingprofesor.com/conferences. If you're interested in being part of a CLAS delegation to the conference, please contact Fred Antczak before August 7, and we'll see if we can touch all their bases, and maybe create sharable resources.
