As we approach the season of start-up meetings, please remember to follow procedures for securing permission to serve "employee meals." We will continue the practice that Dean Stark implemented: send an email to Gretchen Galbraith with details about the meal that is being planned so that this office can secure the relevant permissions.
From Chris Chamberlain, Office of Sponsored Programs
Five years ago the Office of Sponsored Programs hosted the National Council of University Research Administrator (NCURA) Fundamentals of Sponsored Programs Agreements (SPA) training course. We had over sixty participants attend the course representing both GVSU and our collaborators (Van Andel Institute, Spectrum, Ferris State, and others). Once again we are offering "SPA training" at no cost to GVSU faculty and staff. The session will be held September 17 -19, at the Eberhard Center, in downtown Grand Rapids, from roughly 8:00am - 4:00pm.
The program is intended for those involved in sponsored projects administration (or grants) or for the individual who has worked primarily in only one area of sponsored projects and is seeking a broader view of the field. It is targeted specifically to proposal development personnel, sponsored projects administrators, grant and contract accountants, departmental administrators, research compliance administrators, or others who may be involved in sponsored projects administration. This is not a grant writing class.
We are fortunate to have the following individuals as our instructors:
- Joe Gindhart, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance & Director of Sponsored Projects Accounting, Washington University, St. Louis
- Eileen Nielson, Director of Research Administration Education, Harvard School of Public Health
- Janet Simons, Director, Research Policy, University of Maryland, Baltimore
The two and half day session will provide a broad overview of sponsored projects (grants) administration, including preparation and review of proposals, negotiation and acceptance of awards, financial and administrative management, close out, audit, and compliance issues. Without doubt our instructors will also touch on the recently published Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance and its impact.
Here is a link to the NCURA website describing the SPA training: http://www.ncura.edu/Education/TravelingWorkshops/LevelIFundamentalsofSponsoredProjectAdministration.aspx
Please let me know by August 15, 2014 if you are interested in attending. And also, feel free to call me if you have any questions. There is no cost to GVSU faculty or staff.
