For Faculty

1. The General Education Program

The General Education Committee would like to make you aware of changes that will affect students graduating after April 2013.  The letter sent to all students has been reproduced on green paper stapled to a bright pink quick guide for 2013-2014.   Please watch for this important item in your campus mail.

2. CLAS Outstanding Service Awards due

The CLAS Outstanding Service Award materials are due to the CLAS Dean’s Office by Friday, March 15.  Please forward materials to Tracy McLenithan, B-4-232 MAK or mclenitt@gvsu.edu.

The CLAS Outstanding Service Awards include:

  • CLAS Lifetime Faculty Service Award
  • CLAS Annual Faculty Service Award
  • CLAS Administrative and Professional Service Award

3. FAQ for Cross Listing Courses (attachment)

Cross listing courses is a useful tool to faculty and the administration. It is an easy way for the university to become more efficient in filling seats and sharing faculty; it also becomes a mechanism for units to collaborate toward common programmatic and pedagogical goals. Cross listing permits a course to have two (or more) program designations (e.g., PSY and CHM). Since CLAS and Brooks College collaborate on many of these initiatives, the attached FAQ was developed to provide useful information about this process. Please review it, share it, and feel free to contact Associate Dean Schutten for further clarification.

4. Presidential Honor Roll Report Request-- from the Office of the Provost (attachment)

We are gathering information for the 2012-2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.  GVSU was the recipient of the award in 2011 and we hope to continue receiving this prestigious award in the future. We ask that you do your best to collect as accurate information as possible.

Attached please find a spreadsheet (attachment) for your use.

The definitions we are using to categorize the information needed are the following:

  1. Academic service-learning (service that is integrated with academic course content and may include research, fieldwork, internships etc.);
  2. Co-curricular service-learning (not part of an academic course, but utilizing service-learning elements).

Below is a brief example. Please note that if you do not know the exact number of hours per student or faculty, you can estimate.

Both categories of Academic and Co-curricular  includes both direct and indirect services, but you need not report out on each (e.g. direct service may be providing food for the needy, while indirect may be assessing community nutrition needs). (The distinction is merely to remind you of the different types of service that you might include.) Please respond to Mary Schutten by May 1, 2013.

5. Policy on the Establishment and Revision of AP Scores (attachment)

Please see the attached memo from Provost Davis on the approved changes of the policy on the establishment and revision of AP Scores.

6. Rules for membership in FPPC

The Executive Committee to the Senate (ECS) took up a discussion of the eligibility rules for faculty who wish to serve on the Faculty Personnel Policies Committee (FPPC). In light of this discussion, we discovered that there is lore on campus that in order to serve on FPPC one must have previously served on a college level personnel committee. While not all colleges subscribe to this lore, this misconception appears to be quite prevalent (and I will admit, I had it too.) There are no specifications that everyone on FPPC should have this qualification in the Faculty Handbook language defining membership rules for FPPC is below. In fact, there is language specifying that if no one FPPC has such a background, then its Chair should appoint one member who does in consultation with ECS.

Since we are at a time when faculty elections are taking place, and although we are enjoying spring break, I felt it imperative to bring this to your attention ASAP because I heard from many faculty that they would have run for the FPPC if they had served on a college personnel committee before. Especially for CLAS there are two openings on FPPC with only one candidate running.

If you feel someone else should receive this message please either forward it to them or let me know, and I will.

Thanks for your immediate attention.
