  1. Update from Lansing on capital outlay projects—Shaily

In addition to higher education operations, the Governor has recommended planning authorizations for 18 university and community college capital outlay projects.  Grand Valley's science classroom building is ON THE LIST. This does not mean funding, which would still have to be appropriated.

  1. Take 5 to Ask 5 and advising icebreakers

Grand Valley has started an exciting campus-wide career conversation.  In a collaborative effort, the Career Center and the Counseling Center, unveiled the Five Questions initiative this fall in order to raise awareness of the career development tasks students will explore during their time at GVSU.

We challenge students to take 5 minutes to ask themselves 5 questions:

What are my interests, passions, and values?

What are my skills and abilities?

What steps can I take to test them out?

Where do I want to go?

How do I get there?

The Five Questions website ( was created as a resource for all members of the campus community.  Students will be able to self-engage in the exploration process through the website.  As you are engaging in conversations with students—in advising appointments, the classroom, casual interactions, and extra-curricular activities—we hope you will challenge and support students in this developmental process by asking them the Five Questions.

If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, the Five Questions team is available to meet with your unit to more fully explore the possibilities of using the Five Questions in your work with students.  To schedule, please contact Lisa Knapp ( or Megan Riksen ( at 331-3311.
