For Faculty

1. Midterm Grade Reporting

Midterm Grading will open on Monday, February 18, 2013.   This is an important student support process. Midterm grades are required for all freshmen and for undergraduate students classified as less than good standing. Only those students who require a midterm grade will be listed on the Banner grade sheet so please be sure to check to see if there are students in your courses who need a midterm grade. Midterm grades are due before 12:00 noon on Tuesday, February 26, 2013.

2. Nominations for CLAS Election Are Open

The CLAS Faculty Council will accept nominations for CLAS and University Committees starting Thursday, February 7 through Thursday, February 21, and the election itself will start on Tuesday, February 26 and run until Tuesday, March 12. The nominations and the elections are run from the on-line ballot site:

https://secure.gvsu.edu/ballot/index.cfm?  NOW OPEN

[Note: please supply your departmental affiliation.]

The nominations ballot for the 2013 elections to CLAS and University committees opens Thursday, February 7. The ballot site lists all governance committees, the number of open seats on each committee, the meeting times, and any special requirements that may apply.  You may nominate yourself or someone else. In order to nominate someone, you must enter their name and their e-mail address. Once you have done this, the system will automatically send them an e-mail so that he or she can accept the nomination. In order for the nomination to be official, the candidate must click accept and provide a personal statement of not more than 150 words. The nomination is not official until the person accepts the nomination.

The CLAS Faculty Council would like to encourage you to consider running for a seat on a governance committee. Faculty governance plays a vital role at Grand Valley and having CLAS well-represented in that process is good for all of us. Any questions or need any additional information? Contact Faculty Council Chair Colleen Lewis at lewiscol@gvsu.edu.

3. Reminder - Research Clusters Grant Applications due March 1

Please submit applications to Shaily Menon in the CLAS Deans office by March 1, as an electronic attachment for review by the Research Clusters Steering Group.

Click here for Research Clusters Grant Application Guidelines.

Successful applications will request funding for projects focusing on one of the five Research Clusters (Borders, Brain, Health, Urban, and Water) and will involve students, include participation of faculty from 3 or more disciplines (sciences, humanities, and social sciences), demonstrate how collaborative effort will help solve the question/problem under investigation in a way that individual effort is less likely to do so, include plans for dissemination of results internally (e.g. faculty research colloquium, SSD) and externally (e.g. conferences, publications, and use the grant as seed money to help with seeking external grant funding for the project. Special consideration will be given to projects that include a technology transfer component or a community engagement component.

4. Internships Available to Students

The Student PIRGs, the Public Interest Research Group, are looking for talented student activists to join their team of interns.  They are working to protect clean air by limiting coal plant pollution, get big money out of politics, and expand public transportation.  As an intern with the Student PIRGs, students learn how to build and lead teams of volunteers, organize events on campus, and work with the media. And students can even earn course credit!

For more information and to apply online at: www.studentpirgs.org/internships

5. Tip to Expedite the Curriculum Program Review Process- From CCC and Doug Way, Library

The library reviews all proposals for resource implications as part of the review process. When a unit submits a large proposal such as revamping a program, a way to expedite the library review process is to communicate in advance with the library so that they can begin the assessment of the program needs prior to submission in the system. This advance communication during the proposal development process will improve the speed of the review process.  Another strategy is to add your library liaison as a reviewer to the program change.
