We look forward to seeing you at the Second CLAS Teaching Roundtables on Monday, November 21, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in 2204 KC (Pere Marquette Room). Join us for roundtable sessions with faculty who have been nominated for, or received, teaching awards and recognition. Participants at each table will have lunch as a group, listen to a presentation, and participate in a discussion of teaching ideas and innovations. Please visit the link to sign up for your preferred table/discussion by Tuesday, November 15th, so that we can complete reservations for our special Thanksgiving lunch. New faculty, experienced faculty, teaching award winners, adjuncts, affiliates, visitors, and administrators – all are welcome to join the conversation.
GVSU annual Relay for Life is looking for YOU! A team for the Faculty & Staff has been created. Now, it is your turn to take the four easy steps to become a part of the team and to help fight back against cancer. The American Cancer Society provides programs for cancer patients and families, as well as those who are in remission. However, they cannot keep these programs running without your help. Follow these steps to sign up:
Go to www.relayforlifegvsu.com
On the right hand sign, click "Sign Up"
Click on Join a Team and Search for GVSU Faculty & Staff
Fill in the information to join ($10 sign-up fee that is put towards your teams fundraising)
Relay for Life takes place on April 13th-14th from 6pm-6am in the Fieldhouse. As the semester progresses, your team captains will provide you with more information. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Andrea Rietveld at andrearietveld1989@gmail.com. We look forward to having you a part of our team!
This year CLAS is asking that all 2011 Faculty Activity Reports and 2012 Workload Plan forms be created using Digital Measures. For those who need a refresher on this program, or are not yet familiar with it, I will be holding 2 more training workshops:
- Wednesday, December. 7, 9:00-10:00am; and
- Tuesday, January 17, 3:00-4:00 pm.
All will be in HRY 111.
It is not necessary to register in advance for these workshops, but I would suggest that before the workshop you log into Digital Measures (https://www.digitalmeasures.com/login/gvsu/faculty/authentication/showLogin.do) You can also go to the CLAS webpage and at the “Digital Measures” button on the left menu, click on “Log In To Digital Measures”. To log in, use your standard username (e.g. “starkg” for me) and your standard network password. If, for some reason, you do not have a DM account, let me know and I will set one up for you. Once you are logged in, I’d suggest you “Watch the video”. On the CLAS web page we have also posted a document “Digital Measures Information and Instructions” that provides more information.

This is a graduate student opportunity that you may be interested in. I expect that BMS, CMB, and BIO will have the most direct connection with the genetic aspects but it looks like they are at least open to students who have majored in humanities, math, or social sciences because of the human health and sustainable development components of genetic modification.

6. Workshop for staff: Working Effectively with Faculty by Susan Christy on Dec. 7, 2011(attachment)
With Human Resources, the Pew FTLC is co-sponsoring a workshop, "Working Effectively with Faculty" with the author of a rather interesting new book by the same title. I saw Susan Christy present at the University of Michigan a few months ago and she led a valuable seminar, particularly for staff new to working with faculty in academic settings. Please encourage unit heads to consider sending their staff to this event. Seating is limited; we can investigate ways to broaden the conversation if interest exceeds capacity.
