1. Fall 2012 CLAS Research Clusters Meeting

Remember the Fall 2012 CLAS Research Clusters Meeting will be held from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 29th in the Pere Marquette Room (2204 KC). Join us to hear about the availability of funding support for projects and to discuss ideas and strategies with colleagues for successful collaborative research.


2. Reminder that Out of the Box starts this week! 

Topic: Rethinking Advising: Seeking Student Retention and a Path to Faculty Equity-- Exploring the best uses of faculty time and expertise

Out of the Box events are hosted by CLAS Faculty Council and sponsored by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  This is a great way to have your voice heard by faculty governance and to meet colleagues from across the college.  CLAS Faculty are invited to participate in one of three workshops exploring the following issues:

  • What is the role of faculty advising in student retention?
  • How do we coordinate faculty and professional advising?
  • How can we achieve faculty equity in advising?
  • Where should advising fit in the Faculty Workload?

Choose one date to participate and register by clicking on that date:

3. Grandparents, Grandkids and Grand Valley (G3) Summer Camp!

More presenters needed for Grandparents, Grandkids and Grand Valley (G3) Summer Camp!

The deadline to be a presenter for Grandparents, Grandkids, and Grand Valley (G3) Camp is fast approaching! 

We are in need of more presenters for summer 2013 G3 camp (June 25 - 27, 2013).  Even though the camp date seems to be quite a long time away, we need to start planning now in order to be ready to communicate with families by November 2012.  Camp registration makes a great Christmas gift!

We are writing to invite you to be part of this program by designing and offering a 90 minute session for the camp. (You may choose to expand your session by offering a "part one" and "part two," however you must then be able to fill a time span of 180 minutes.)  Our primary goal is to provide opportunities to engage participants in significant, hands-on learning.  We encourage you to be creative and innovative.  Additionally, we would like to broaden the students' perception of the panorama of academic opportunities in higher education. Finally, we want to provide a campus living experience and encourage students to investigate possible careers related to the sessions offered.

In our 2012 pilot year, we attracted 100 participants.  We are expecting this number will increase significantly for 2013.  In order to provide a rich and diverse selection of sessions, we anticipate the need for a minimum of 25-30 sessions.

If you are interested in offering a session, we are extending the deadline.  Please submit the attached Faculty Planning Form by October 31, 2012. We are asking for a title, session description, and various session requirements to help us build a compelling and inviting camp program.  The staff members at the Regional Math and Science Center are happy to discuss and explore ideas with faculty who wish to participate.   Kathy Agee at (x13031).


4. Boren Scholarship Information Session (attached flyer) 

Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 5:30 p.m., KC 2259

During the information session, students will learn about the Boren Scholarships which provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad to learn languages in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. national security interests and how to prepare for the competitive application process.  The campus application deadline is January 25, 2013.

Complete scholarship details are available at and interested students should thoroughly read this website.  If students are unable to attend the information session, they should call the Meijer Honors College at 616-331-3219 to schedule an appointment with Amanda Cuevas, Director, Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships or stop by 120 Niemeyer Hall on Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. for walk-in advising hours.
