1. Funding Study Abroad Information Session (attachment--flyer)

The Padnos International Center (PIC) and the Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships will be hosting a Funding Study Abroad Information Session for students interested in studying abroad and learning about ways to pay for it.  Even if students won't be studying abroad right away, we encourage them to start planning well in advance.  Attached is a flyer to share in classes and with students.  Thank you in advance for sharing with students and faculty/staff within your respective units.

Participants will learn about:

  • the Padnos International Center (PIC) Scholarship Application Process,
  • Nationally Competitive Study Abroad Funding Opportunities and how to start preparing for them,
  • and hear from current GVSU scholarship recipients

When: Wednesday, October 17th

Where: KC Room 2263

Time: 5:30-7:00 p.m.

2. Afro-Futurism: Considering Blacks in Science Fiction through Octavia Butler's Kindred

Last year the African Diaspora Conversation Brown Bag series was a success; this year we continue to ride the wave!  The theme for year is "Afro-Futurism:  Considerations of Blacks in Science Fiction."  The speakers are all GVSU professors, staff and students from disciplines as far and wide as History to Cell and Molecular Biology!  The newest and potentially the most exciting aspect of the program this academic year is that we will have a group of students who will formally participate as panelists!  ALL have read Octavia Butler's Kindred  and will discuss their take on the book and the theme of science fiction from their various disciplines.  Since there is such a cross section of disciplines we are happy to say that every event is a co-curricular for LIB 100 and 201.  Copies of the book are available for sign-out in LOH 117 for faculty, staff and/or students who would like to read it.  Please find below a summary of Kindred:
"Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is abruptly snatched from her home in California and transported to the ante-bellum South.  Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, has summoned her across time to save him from drowning.  After this first summons, she is drawn back, again and again, to protect Rufus and ensure he will grow to manhood and father the daughter who will become Dana's ancestor.  Each time she arrives in the past, Dana's sojourns will become more and more dangerous because of Rufus's obsessive need for her.  The reader never knows whether she will survive one journey or the next."
